Good News for Hospice

St Johns Hospice enjoyed good luck this week when we received a cheque for £10,000 from the charitable fund set up by members of the Premier Social Club when the club closed at the end of 2005.
Over the past 3 years the fund has given away over £30,000 to good causes but the trustees have now decided to give the remaining funds to St John's Hospice and Claire House.
During the 31 years the club was in existence it gave over £250,000 to local charities and the trustees are delighted to go out on a high by helping such worthy causes.
Lesley Woodhead, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at St John's Hospice said
We have always had great support from Cadbury's and Premier Brand but this is really the icing on the cake. Our new Out Patient Services Unit is open to patients following our big build last year and we are now able to help more Wirral patients and their families than before.
As with any new build once you are in and using the space you know what it is you still need and this money will be used to complete these purchases. With Spring now here the first of these will be some furniture for our new conservatory so our patients can make full use of the new facilities.
Thank you to all at the social club that worked hard over many years raising money for local good causes that help local people.
New Out Patient Services Unit - Phase One Completed!

We are pleased to advise that Phase 1 of our exciting development is now complete. This new purpose built facility will, very shortly form a central location for all of the Outpatient Services currently provided, enabling enhancement of services in line with the strategic direction of the Hospice, with prime consideration to the needs of the Wirral community and their patients.
Whilst the new building is itself impressive, behind the scenes refurbishment work (phase 2 of the project) is still ongoing within the “old” Day Care and Triage areas and as a result a number of contingency arrangements are in place.
We anticipate completion of Phase 2 by November at which time all services will be located in their “new homes” and the new facility will start to be used as intended.
Working closely with our contractors, Mellwood Construction Ltd, we have ensured the development has not compromised level of service provided.
The support given to our 25th Anniversary Appeal has been outstanding and we would thank everyone who has helped/donated to the appeal, contributing to its success and our gratitude is conveyed to all.
Background
Following the hard work of many people, St John's Hospice opened its doors in 1983. Originally based in two of the old children's wards, fifteen beds and a Day Care Service were provided. Following the Sunshine Appeal, which raised £1million a new sixteen bed Inpatient Unit was opened in 1997. Further development of the Hospice provision was the addition of Outpatient Services. Another significant milestone was the launching, in 1997, of Light Up A Life which continues to be a focal point of Hospice activity for the people of Wirral
Late in 2006, all adult Hospices were invited by the Department of Health to bid for a share of £40 million to improve the physical environment of Hospices as part of the DOH Dignity in Care for Older People for patients facing the end of life.
A bid was submitted in December 2006 to enhance our Out-Patient and Day Care facilities in order to allow more people to benefit from the services offered by St John's Hospice.
In April 2007, we were delighted to hear that despite the total value of bids being £80 million, the bid submitted by St John's Hospice to the DOH was approved in full. £359,000 was granted to fund the building extension needed to put our ambitious plan into action and build a new wing to house our Out Patient Services Unit.
What will this mean for patients and carers?
The new facilities will allow for a greater number of patients and carers to receive care at St John's Hospice from the team of health care professionals.
The aim of the new therapy unit is to enable patients to retain independence, maintain confidence and enhance self esteem so that they can continue to live at home with the necessary care and support.
